German sentence structure: Have a sandwich!

Updated: Dec 8, 2023

One concept about sentence structure in German is very useful. As a native speaker you do not pay much attention to it all the time Well, until you coach professionals that also deal with syntax in their profession: Programmers or software developers. While I was showing him the first sentences in German, he said: "So you make a sandwich of them!"

English example: "I am studying German with Ruediger online tomorrow."

German concept: "Ich lerne mit Rüdiger morgen online Deutsch".

In every-day speech this concept is usually slightly more flexible. However, in principle, in German you put every additional information ( how, where, when) between the two slices of bread that make the bare minimum sentence " Ich lerne Deutsch".

Now, if you want your sandwich with cheese and onions, salad, and / or some ketchup or mayonnaise, please come to my online kitchen.

Guten Appetit

A German sentence is like a sandwich. The key meaning is at the beginning and the end, like two slices of bread in a sandwich. Adddional information is in between.
